Call for Submissions for BLOCK SAT

lorem

Playwrights Theatre Centre and Project SAT (South Asian Theatre) are calling for submissions from potential participants in a new series of dramaturgical discussions focused on exploring the heritage and potential of South Asian Theatre in the lower mainland, BC.

Block SAT includes detailed conversations and case studies about work by South Asian artists from a variety of cultural traditions, either from Canada or abroad, who are challenging the dominant modes of cultural creation. Part of the work is to familiarize the participants with current models of development and production, with an intention to contest a mono-cultural vision of Canadian culture and to provide tools to move the artist’s practice forward.

The structure of the individual sessions will be derived in part from the desires of the participants, and group discussion may include:  issues of ethics and permission in the incorporation of the sacred in performance, tensions between a desire for “entertainment” and sensory stimulation,  and a desire for meaning; complex identities and roles in community; representations of community; finding potency in processes that are now labelled “community”.   The participants will be asked to attend two theatrical events, one before Block SAT begins, to use as a basis for discussion.

Format: series of 6 sessions, totalling 18 hours, plus two “outings”.

Timeline:  Six Wednesdays, beginning June 27 and ending August 1, 2018  6 pm – 9 pm at PTC, 739 Gore Ave.

Program cost:

Participants will purchase a PTC membership and pay a $100 deposit.  The deposit is refundable, based on attendance.  If you are unable to attend the majority of the sessions, you are taking a space from someone else and will lose your deposit.

Program size: maximum 8 participants.

To join Block SAT 2018:  please submit a letter of no more than two pages outlining how you expect Block SAT to intersect with your performance practice along with a resume of your work in theatre and/or other live performance via e-mail to kathleen@playwrightstheatre.com with the subject heading Block SAT.

Deadline for submission:  Friday, June 1, 2018

Participants will be informed of their acceptance by Monday, June 11, 2018

Producers: Playwrights Theatre Centre and Rohit Chokhani for Project SAT.

Curators: Kathleen Flaherty, Rohit Chokhani and Heidi Taylor.

This program is funded by the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts. This project is a part of a bigger sector wide initiative called Project SAT which is an acronym for South Asian Theatre led by Rohit Chokhani.
