Call for submissions: The PTC Writers’ Colony

lorem

ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS UNTIL: August 7, 2016

PTC is convening our tenth annual Writers’ Colony in Vancouver, BC, December 6-16, 2016.  Playwrights from across Canada are invited to make submissions to be part of it.

Each year, PTC welcomes a small group of professional Canadian playwrights to join us for a short-term residency in Vancouver. The Colony is led by PTC’s seasoned dramaturgs Heidi Taylor and Kathleen Flaherty with this year’s guest dramaturg Janet Hinton. PTC works with each participant to create a process tailored to their play, which may include workshops with actors, dramaturgical sessions, studio work, or design consults. Participating playwrights will receive a stipend during the residency and have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other participants of the Colony.

Playwrights Theatre Centre is continuously working to make all our programs accessible. We encourage writers with a lived experience of disability to apply for all of our programs. Flexible timing and location, virtual sessions, attention to time of day and duration of work, and flexible stipend plans can all be designed with the artist to maximize creative satisfaction.

If you prefer an alternative means of applying, please contact kathleen@playwrightstheatre.com.

Applications should include:

  • a completed online application form,
  • a copy of the current draft of the play or project you propose to work on
  • a letter outlining what work has been done to date, what specific elements or processes you want to explore through the Colony,
  • and your resume.

PTC membership is  $25.  Please let us know if the membership fee is a barrier. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Applicants from outside Vancouver receive accommodation and per diems as well as travel assistance.  We encourage playwrights from outside Vancouver who plan to submit to apply for travel funding.  Give us a call if you want assistance with accessing funding sources.

To be able to relax in the world of the play and my role as a playwright for the duration of the Colony was a deep and peaceful experience. That’s not how I usually experience writing. More like mind-bendingly stressful. But then my writing is always slammed up with producing/directing/parenting/homemaking. And I usually don’t have the intelligent and calm companionship of a dramaturg like Heidi Taylor with me.  In short, I knew the play would grow, but I didn’t realize that I would grow. That the play would infuse me with strength. And that, at the end, is how I feel.  – Kendra Fanconi

Submit digital applications to: submissions@playwrightstheatre.com, with “Colony submission” in the subject line, and the PDFs of your letter, resume, and project proposal attached. Digital applications will only be processed once the application form has been received. If a digital submission is not possible, please contact Kathleen Flaherty kathleen@playwrightstheatre.com to make alternative arrangements.

Theatre is alive. An ever-evolving dialogue with life and with the world. PTC is where that conversation starts. We collaborate on new work with emerging and established theatre artists. Our focus is dramaturgy, development, playmaking from A to Z. Through carefully curated programs and deep conversations with artists, we help them transform their practice and ideas. New and necessary stories take shape. Fresh ways of working, thinking and creating emerge. We foster a culture of inclusivity and aim to make PTC accessible to the widest community possible.
