Flying Start is an 18-month development process for a new play that culminates in a first production at a PACT theatre. The chosen playwright creates a development plan with the dramaturg and producer. Their play takes shape through one-on-one dramaturgical meetings, research, and workshops with actors and the Touchstone director. The playwright and creative team read, discuss and workshop the script until a production draft is ready for the designers. With support from the dramaturg, the playwright makes adjustments throughout in response to rehearsals. Be prepared to burn the midnight oil! Playwrights must write at least four complete drafts in less than a year and a half. Then they create a post-production draft ready to send out to other potential producers. The playwright receives a development fee from Touchstone, payments for any workshops, access to a senior playwright mentor and ongoing dramaturgical collaboration.
