Call for Applications: The PTC Residency Program, WrightSpace

Image of thought bubble syaing WrightSpace Applications Now Open

PTC is convening our fourteenth annual 10-day residency, WrightSpace, in Vancouver, BC, December 7 – 19, 2020.

Each year, PTC welcomes a small group of professional Canadian playwrights to join us for a short-term residency to work on one of their projects. This year, we are inviting proposals for projects engaged with creatively increasing access for audiences. We encourage playwrights and creation teams to grapple with hybrid (live/digital) experiments from an aesthetic perspective. Small audiences, distanced participation, and creative ways to bring people together will be part of our shared explorations. Residency participants may re-think a piece that already exists and consider specific experiments to develop it further. PTC will engage technical support as required to assist in executing creative proposals. Artists receive a stipend ($2000) and should be available to dedicate significant periods of studio and writing time to the work during the residency. We will follow public health guidelines in designing any in-person contacts, and will engage digital processes in the residency. Applicants should be based in Canada, in Pacific or Mountain time zones to ensure sufficient time cross-over.

WrightSpace is led by PTC’s most seasoned dramaturg AED Heidi Taylor and the Dramaturg, Creative Engagement soon to be chosen. PTC works with each participant to create a process tailored to their play, which may include workshops with actors, dramaturgical sessions, studio work, or design consults.

Playwrights Theatre Centre is continuously working to make all our programs accessible. We encourage writers with a lived experience of disability to apply for all of our programs. We are also an equity-seeking company, with a history of working with artists from numerous communities. We are dedicated to creating spaces within which Indigenous, Black, people of colour, LGBTQAI2+people, and people with intersectional identity perspectives can lead and create. Flexible timing and location, virtual sessions, attention to time of day and duration of work, and flexible stipend plans can all be designed with the artist to maximize creative satisfaction.

The piece I was developing incorporated movement, dance, and lighting in the presentation of the stories and themes within the piece. The actors PTC engaged … were all skilled in this aesthetic approach to creating theatre which helped me grow not just as a playwright, but as a theatre maker.  As an artist with a disability I find I often have to advocate for accessible spaces and practices, and for the inclusion of other artists with disabilities. But at PTC no such advocacy was required: all my needs in terms of accessibility were anticipated and they were proactive in engaging an artist with a disability to collaborate on my piece. This company is clearly a leader in terms of diversity, access and inclusion.  – Deb Patterson

WrightSpace is a unique program which gives playwrights an intensive period of writing with a process customized to each particular playwright.…..It was clear from the outset that PTC cared about my work – they championed the work and supported me to refine and really go for my vision with the piece.  I achieved vastly more in the 10 days with PTC than I could have in months and months on my own. – Sunny Drake
