Call for Submissions: The PTC Residency Program, WrightSpace
ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS UNTIL: August 3, 2018
PTC is convening our twelfth annual 10-day residency, WrightSpace, in Vancouver, BC, December 5-14th, 2018.
Each year, PTC welcomes a small group of professional Canadian playwrights to join us for a short-term residency to work on one of their projects. WrightSpace is led by PTC’s seasoned dramaturgs Heidi Taylor and Kathleen Flaherty and a guest dramaturg. PTC works with each participant to create a process tailored to their play, which may include workshops with actors, dramaturgical sessions, studio work, or design consults.
This year, we are interested in focusing on documenting the emergent process of each writer that may include dramaturgy, actors, studio work, and interdisciplinary collaboration, as required by the playwright. We encourage playwrights to apply who are interested in developing a process together as well as working on their play. To facilitate that, for this year only, we wish to focus on playwrights who live in the Vancouver area. Playwright participants receive a stipend and should be available to dedicate significant periods of studio and writing time to the work during the residency.
Playwrights Theatre Centre is continuously working to make all our programs accessible. We encourage writers with a lived experience of disability to apply for all of our programs. Flexible timing and location, virtual sessions, attention to time of day and duration of work, and flexible stipend plans can all be designed with the artist to maximize creative satisfaction.
If you prefer an alternative means of applying, please contact email@example.com.
Applications should include:
- a completed online application form,
- a copy of the current draft of the play or project you propose to work on
- a letter outlining what work has been done to date and what specific elements or processes you want to explore through WrightSpace,
- and your resume.
A playwright membership is required to submit to a PTC program. PTC membership is $25. Please let us know if the membership fee is a barrier. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Give us a call if you want assistance with accessing funding sources.

The piece I was developing incorporated movement, dance, and lighting in the presentation of the stories and themes within the piece. The actors PTC engaged … were all skilled in this aesthetic approach to creating theatre which helped me grow not just as a playwright, but as a theatre maker. As an artist with a disability I find I often have to advocate for accessible spaces and practices, and for the inclusion of other artists with disabilities. But at PTC no such advocacy was required: all my needs in terms of accessibility were anticipated and they were proactive in engaging an artist with a disability to collaborate on my piece. This company is clearly a leader in terms of diversity, access and inclusion. – Deb Patterson
WrightSpace is a unique program which gives playwrights an intensive period of writing with a process customized to each particular playwright.…..It was clear from the outset that PTC cared about my work – they championed the work and supported me to refine and really go for my vision with the piece. I achieved vastly more in the 10 days with PTC than I could have in months and months on my own. – Sunny Drake
