Unscripted: Engkanto, brings you into Kamila Sediego (PTC 2021-24 Associate) process, with dramaturgy by Joanna Garfinkel.
Engkanto tells of a family haunted through time and place that is both concrete and in the inbetween, by human, colonial, and supernatural forces. A parent and his child come face to face with Philippine spirits called the engkanto to reunite their family and reckon with generational secrets, trauma, and stories both told and untold. A dark fairytale pulling from Filipino folktale, first-person accounts, true family histories, and the patterns of oral storytelling, Engkanto imagines a new hybrid folktale for the Filipinx-Canadian diaspora.
Come and discover your place between the supernatural and the tangible world, between your ancestors and your predecessors, between what you’ve been told and what’s been held secret. Hear stories, record your own, make an offering to those who have passed before you. Witness in-progress scenes and a musical number, and talk with your neighbour over a delicious plate of Filipino food. Celebrate and help with the research of Kamila Sediego’s work in development, “Engkanto” during Filipino Heritage Month!
